The village of Salamumu is located on the southern coast of Upolu island in Samoa and possesses a unique origin story closely linked to volcanic activity in the early 20th century. The settlement was established between 1905 and 1911 by refugees from Savai'i island who were forced to flee their home village of Sale'aula following the devastating eruption of Mt. Matavanu. The fertile land on Upolu was allocated to these displaced people, creating a lasting cultural and familial bond between the two islands that persists to this day. Today, Salamumu is renowned for its pristine coastal areas and traditional Samoan way of life, reflected in the local 'fale' architecture and community-based ceremonies. The village actively manages its natural resources, particularly the coral reefs which are vital for local subsistence fishing and emerging eco-tourism. Its geographic location provides a serene environment away from the busy capital of Apia, making it an important site for cultural preservation and maritime biodiversity.
