Mukura Forest (Rwanda)

Weather…

Mukura Forest is a component of the Gishwati-Mukura National Park in western Rwanda, representing one of the few remaining fragments of montane rainforest along the Albertine Rift. Historically, the forest once covered a vast expanse, but it was severely depleted during the 20th century due to human settlement, illegal mining, and agricultural expansion. Currently, the protected area spans approximately 1,200 hectares and is situated at altitudes between 2,300 and 2,700 meters. The forest is a biodiversity hotspot, home to several endemic species, including golden monkeys and over 160 bird species. Geographically, Mukura acts as a vital water catchment area, sustaining local rivers and preventing soil erosion on the steep ridges. Since its designation as a national park in 2015, extensive reforestation efforts have been underway to create a forest corridor between Gishwati and Mukura, aimed at preserving the genetic health of isolated chimpanzee populations.
