Mukura Forest (Rwanda)

Weather…

Mukura Forest is a high-altitude forest reserve in western Rwanda, forming part of the Gishwati-Mukura National Park established in recent years. Originally part of a vast rainforest belt stretching across Central Africa, the forest was significantly diminished during the 20th century due to deforestation and mining activities. The reserve is situated on the Congo-Nile divide, playing a critical role in local water catchment and soil erosion prevention. Its flora includes rare indigenous trees and ferns, while its fauna supports endangered primates such as chimpanzees and golden monkeys. Since 2015, intensive restoration efforts have been underway to recover its biodiversity and promote sustainable ecotourism. The Mukura sector is particularly noted for its endemic bird species associated with the Albertine Rift.
