The Moșna Fortified Church in Sibiu County is one of the most impressive late Gothic ensembles in Transylvania. The current church was built between 1480 and 1491 on the foundations of an older basilica and dedicated to Saint Servatius. It is uniquely famous for the craftsmanship of master stonemason Andreas Lapicida, who created the elaborate tracery windows and the monumental tabernacle, a masterpiece of stone carving. To defend against invasions, the church was surrounded in the 16th century by a double ring of enclosure walls and several powerful defensive towers, most of which remain well-preserved. Inside, the church holds valuable treasures, including an 1834 altar and medieval tombstones. Moșna's architectural scale reflects the historical wealth of its Saxon community, which once vied with Mediaș for regional prominence. Today, the fortified church is a major cultural site and a key highlight along the Transylvanian Saxon heritage trails.

Moșna Fortified Church is a Gothic church fortress, whose interior can usually be visited during the season. The exterior area with massive defensive walls is freely accessible all year. Guided tours are often offered.

The church typically has seasonal opening hours from spring to autumn. In winter, access is limited. Services are held on Sundays, when the interior is open.
Photography
Photography is allowed anytime in the exterior area. Inside, flash is often not permitted to protect the artworks. The defensive walls offer great perspectives for pictures.
Time needed
Plan about 45 minutes to 1 hour for a visit. That's enough for the church, fortifications, and courtyard. Those joining a guided tour should allow more time.

The fortified church is near Mediaș, so it can be combined with other fortified churches in the area like Biertan. A visit to the old town of Mediaș is also recommended.
Getting there
The church is accessible by car on well-maintained roads. Parking is available at the village entrance. From Mediaș train station, a bus goes to Moșna, but connections are not very frequent.
