The local council decided to provide free public transport passes for pensioners residing in the commune of Șelimbăr. The benefit applies to residents of all associated villages and aims to support social integration and modernize transport services.
Șelimbăr, known in German as Schellenberg, is a strategically located city in Sibiu County, bordering the southeastern edge of the city of Sibiu. It holds a significant place in Romanian history as the site of the Battle of Șelimbăr in 1599, where Michael the Brave defeated the Transylvanian forces, leading to the brief unification of the Romanian principalities. A commemorative monument marks the historic battlefield today. Originally a Transylvanian Saxon settlement, the town still preserves its fortified evangelical church and traditional Saxon architectural layout in its historical core. However, in recent years, Șelimbăr has undergone a dramatic transformation into a wealthy, high-growth suburban area. It is now home to the largest commercial hub in central Romania, including massive shopping malls and industrial zones. This economic boom has triggered a population surge, with many young professionals from Sibiu relocating to the modern residential complexes built on its outskirts. The city's geography provides striking views of the nearby Făgăraș and Cindrel mountains, while its location on the E68 and E81 European roads makes it a vital logistics center. Șelimbăr represents a unique blend of medieval history and 21st-century economic dynamism.
