Târnăveni is a municipality in Mureș County, Transylvania, situated along the Târnava Mică River. The city rose to international prominence in the early 20th century following the discovery of massive natural gas deposits in the surrounding plateau, which catalyzed the establishment of a powerful chemical industry. For much of the 20th century, Târnăveni was synonymous with chemical production, hosting large-scale plants that defined the local economy and urban layout. Historically known as Dicsőszentmárton, the town once served as a county seat, reflected in its formal administrative buildings and central plazas. Geographically, it is set within the Târnava Plateau, a region famous for its rolling hills and high-quality white wine production. The cultural fabric of the city is a blend of Romanian and Hungarian influences, notably being the birthplace of the avant-garde composer György Ligeti. In recent years, Târnăveni has focused on ecological remediation of its industrial past and fostering a more sustainable economic model based on retail and light manufacturing.
