Tismana is a historic town in Gorj County, located in the Oltenia region at the foot of the Vâlcan Mountains. It is internationally renowned for the Tismana Monastery, founded in the 14th century by Saint Nicodemus, making it the oldest standing monastic establishment in Wallachia. The monastery's fortress-like appearance highlights its historical importance as a cultural and defensive center. A fascinating chapter in its history occurred during World War II, when the Romanian National Bank's gold reserve was hidden in a nearby cave to protect it from invading forces. Beyond its spiritual significance, Tismana is a center for traditional folk art, particularly for its intricately hand-woven carpets and traditional costumes. The town is surrounded by rare edible chestnut forests, adding a unique botanical value to its landscape. Today, Tismana’s economy thrives on religious and eco-tourism, hydropower production, and traditional crafts, offering visitors a profound journey into Romania's medieval past and animated cultural heritage.
