Getting there
The singing dunes are located southwest of the capital and can be reached via paved roads until quite close by, with the final few kilometers usually needing to be driven over unpaved sandy tracks.
Best season
To best experience the acoustic phenomenon, the dry, windy winter and spring months are most suitable, as moisture causes the sand grains to stick together and greatly diminishes any sound generation.
Terrain & paths
The ground consists of extremely fine sand blown into massive crescent shapes. Climbing the dunes, which reach up to 40 meters high, is exhausting work, as you slide backward in the soft sand with every step.
What to bring
It is advisable to walk barefoot or with well-fitting sandals. Bring plenty of water, sun protection, and perhaps a piece of cardboard to slide down the dunes while seated to help generate the deep sounds.
Parking
Vehicles are usually parked at the base of the dunes on slightly firmer ground. Be extremely careful not to drive too close to the soft, treacherous sand if you do not have a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
Safety
Strictly avoid the extremely hot summer midday hours, as the burning sand can cause serious burns to bare feet. Travel in groups to help one another in case of slipping down the steep sandy inclines.
Time needed
Most visitors spend about one to two hours climbing up the massive dunes, sliding back down, listening intently to the humming sounds, and enjoying the wide, sweeping views across the open desert.
