Trancoso is one of Portugal's twelve historic villages (Aldeias Históricas), located on a high plateau in the Guarda district. The town is surrounded by an almost complete circuit of medieval walls, originally erected in the 9th century and later expanded by King Dinis I. A significant event in the town's history was the wedding of King Dinis and Isabel of Aragon in 1282, which took place in the local chapel. Trancoso also possesses a significant Jewish heritage, documented in the Jewish quarter with its symbolic houses and the Isaac Cardoso Interpretation Center. The town was the site of important military engagements, including the Battle of Trancoso in 1385, which paved the way for the Portuguese victory against Castile. The local economy is characterized by chestnut production and traditional pastries, while tourism benefits from the well-preserved medieval atmosphere.
