Pinhel, known as the Falcon City (Cidade Falcão), is located in the Guarda district and was for centuries one of Portugal's most important border fortresses. The town's history is closely tied to territorial defense, evidenced by the remains of the medieval walls and the two prominent castle towers dating back to the 14th century. King Sancho I granted the first charter in 1209, and later King Dinis I heavily reinforced the defenses. Pinhel played a crucial role during the Napoleonic Wars and maintained its status as a strategic center until the 19th century. Today's town is famous for its wine production within the Beira Interior region and is home to a rich cultural heritage with numerous manor houses and religious buildings, such as the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo. The landscape around Pinhel is defined by granite formations and the valleys of the Côa and Pinhel rivers.
