The Serra do Larouco is the second highest mountain range in mainland Portugal, reaching an altitude of 1527 meters at its summit. Situated on the border between Portugal and Spain in the Trás-os-Montes region, the relief is a massive granite formation characterized by high plateaus and deep gorges. It is the source of several significant rivers, most notably the Cávado, which begins its course at the Larouco springs. Historically, the mountain was a sacred site for Celtiberian peoples, evidenced by inscriptions dedicated to the deity Laroucus. Today, the region is a premier destination for paragliding due to the handy thermals created by its steep slopes. Geologically, the range represents a major fault zone between granite and metamorphic rocks. The local wildlife includes rare species such as the Iberian wolf and various birds of prey.
