Serra da Peneda (Portugal)

Weather…

The Serra da Peneda is an imposing mountain massif in the extreme northwest of Portugal, forming the western part of the Peneda-Gerês National Park. Reaching altitudes of up to 1340 meters at the Pedrada summit, it is characterized by spectacular granite landscapes, deep valleys, and rushing mountain streams. At the heart of this relief lies the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Peneda, an 18th and 19th-century pilgrimage site built against a monumental cliff face. Geologically, the Peneda range is a prime example of glacial and periglacial formation processes, reflected in its distinctive rock boulders and glacial cirques. The flora includes rare relict species, while the fauna is highlighted by the presence of the Iberian wolf and the indigenous Garrano wild horses. The traditional mountain way of life, defined by seasonal transhumance between 'inverneiras' (winter villages) and 'brandas' (summer pastures), is still evident in remote villages like Castro Laboreiro.
