The western slopes of Serra do Alturas are located in the remote Barroso region of northern Portugal, near the border with Galicia. This mountain landscape is defined by vast high plateaus and rugged granite formations that provide a characteristic stark aesthetic. The area is part of the World Agricultural Heritage, as local communities have maintained traditional farming systems for centuries, including communal grazing for the famous Barrosa cattle. Climatic conditions are extreme, featuring snowy winters and short, intense summers, which restricts vegetation to hardy shrubs and mountain grasses. Geologically, granite is the dominant rock type, often appearing as spectacular boulders scattered across the surface. The region's isolation has facilitated the preservation of archaic customs and a unique level of biodiversity. In the valleys, small villages with traditional stone houses can still be found, some retaining their original thatch or schist roofs.

The western flank can be approached via the valley roads of Trás-os-Montes, which transition gradually from paved surfaces to narrower agricultural and forestry tracks as you go higher.
