The Lagoa de Albufeira is a coastal lagoon located in the municipality of Sesimbra, south of Lisbon. It is separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a system of sand dunes, although an artificial channel is opened each spring to facilitate water exchange with the sea. Reaching a maximum depth of 15 meters, it is the deepest lagoon in Portugal. The area is divided into two sections: Lagoa Grande (Great Lagoon) and Lagoa Pequena (Little Lagoon), with the latter being a significant bird sanctuary. Over 40 species of birds use the lagoon for nesting or as a migratory stopover. Due to favorable wind conditions, Lagoa Grande is a premier location for windsurfing and kitesurfing. The geological formation dates back to the Holocene epoch and hosts a unique blend of fresh and saltwater ecosystems.

Reaching this beautiful coastal lagoon typically involves a relatively short drive south from Lisbon, navigating through pleasant pine forests before arriving at the waterfront. While having a private vehicle is by far the most convenient method, some seasonal local buses do run from nearby larger coastal towns.

The warm summer months are incredibly popular for swimming in the calm, protected waters and enjoying various light water sports. Spring and early autumn are generally considered the best times for dedicated birdwatching, offering a much quieter, serene atmosphere across the expansive natural areas.

The terrain transitions fascinatingly from very soft, expansive oceanic sandy beaches on the Atlantic side to calmer, flatter muddy banks deeper into the sheltered lagoon. Visitors walking around the inland sections will mostly encounter gentle dirt paths winding nicely through the aromatic pine woods.

Several large, unpaved parking areas are typically available right near the main beach access points where the lagoon famously meets the ocean. During the peak summer weekends, these highly popular lots can fill up very quickly, making a relatively early arrival highly advisable to secure a good spot.

While the inner lagoon waters are generally very calm and highly favored for families with children, the actual inlet connecting to the Atlantic can feature surprisingly strong currents. Swimmers and paddleboarders must always exercise sensible caution and strictly adhere to localized warning flags and lifeguards.

Many casual visitors easily spend an entire, highly relaxing day here, smoothly alternating between sunbathing on the beach and exploring the much quieter, bird-rich inland trails.
