São Felipe Fortress (Portugal)

Weather…

The São Felipe Fortress in Setúbal was commissioned in 1582 by King Philip I of Portugal (Philip II of Spain) to defend the Sado River estuary from pirate raids and hostile navies. Designed by the renowned Italian military architect Filippo Terzi, the fortress features an irregular star-shaped layout that cleverly conforms to the steep terrain of the hillside. A highlight of the interior is the small chapel, added in the 18th century and entirely lined with blue and white azulejo tiles by Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes, depicting the life of Saint Philip. Throughout the centuries, the fort played a critical role in the coastal defense system of the region before undergoing restoration in the mid-20th century to become a state-run Pousada. Today, it stands as a prime example of Mannerist military engineering, preserving its thick stone walls and bastions while offering sweeping views of the Atlantic and the Arrábida Natural Park.
