Ajuda National Palace (Portugal)

Weather…

The Ajuda National Palace in Lisbon is an imposing Neoclassical building that served as the official residence of the Portuguese royal family during the 19th century. Following the devastating 1755 earthquake and the destruction by fire of the temporary wooden 'Real Barraca' in 1794, construction of the current palace began in 1802. Due to political instability, the royal court's flight to Brazil during the Napoleonic invasions, and financial difficulties, the original ambitious design was never fully completed, leaving the western facade asymmetrical for centuries. The lavish interiors, including the throne room and the grand dining hall, are filled with precious furniture, tapestries, and artworks that showcase the opulence of King Luis I and Queen Maria Pia's reign. Today, the palace houses a decorative arts museum and the prestigious Ajuda Library. In recent years, the west wing was finally completed with a modern addition to house the Royal Treasure Museum.
