Tapada das Necessidades (Portugal)

Weather…

The Tapada das Necessidades is a historic park in the Estrela district of Lisbon, belonging to the Necessidades Palace ensemble. The facility was created in the 18th century under King John V and originally served as a royal hunting and recreation area. The park is characterized by an eclectic mix of English landscape gardens and formal structures, which were expanded in the 19th century under King Ferdinand II. Particularly noteworthy is the circular iron and glass greenhouse, one of the oldest of its kind in Portugal, as well as the significant collection of cacti and succulents. The Tapada also houses several ponds, fountains, and statues placed amidst a dense stand of exotic trees. As a former retreat of the Portuguese royal family, the grounds preserve an atmosphere of aristocratic seclusion in the middle of the capital.
