Palmela Castle
Palmela Castle is strategically located on a spur of the Arrábida Mountains, offering expansive views over the entire Setúbal Peninsula. The fortress's origins date back to the Moorish period before it was permanently conquered by Christian forces in the 12th century. King Sancho I later granted the castle to the military Order of Santiago, which established its headquarters and built a significant monastery within its walls. The complex is an impressive combination of military fortification and religious architecture, typical for the seat of a chivalric order. Inside the ramparts stand the massive keep, the Church of Santa Maria, and the former monastery, which currently operates as a Pousada (historic hotel). The castle was partially destroyed by the Great Lisbon Earthquake of 1755 but was later faithfully restored to its former glory.
