Monument to the Discoveries (Portugal)

Weather…

The Monument to the Discoveries stands on the northern bank of the Tagus River in Lisbon, commemorating the prominent role Portugal played in the Age of Discovery. Originally built as a temporary structure for the 1940 Portuguese World Exhibition, the current permanent monument was completed in 1960 to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. The 52-meter-high structure is shaped like the prow of a caravel with its sails unfurled, facing the estuary. It features 33 statues of notable figures from Portuguese history, led by Prince Henry at the front, followed by explorers like Vasco da Gama, Ferdinand Magellan, and several cartographers and clerics. Inside, the monument houses exhibition halls and an observation deck that provides panoramic views of the Belém district. A large compass rose mosaic, measuring 50 meters in diameter, is set into the pavement in front of the monument, showing the historical routes of Portuguese sailors. This landmark remains a powerful symbol of the nation's maritime heritage and scientific contributions to global exploration.
