Tejo Estuary Nature Reserve (Portugal)

Weather…

The Tejo Estuary Nature Reserve is the largest wetland in Portugal and one of the most significant in Europe. It spans an area of approximately 14,000 hectares northeast of Lisbon and was established in 1976 to protect the biodiversity of this unique ecosystem. The landscape consists of extensive salt marshes, mudflats, and reed beds shaped by the tides of the Tejo River. The protected area is a vital resting and wintering ground for tens of thousands of migratory birds on the East Atlantic flyway, including flamingos, avocets, and various duck species. Besides its ecological importance for bird conservation, the estuary plays a central role as a nursery for many marine fish species. Traditional activities such as salt extraction and rice cultivation are continued in the peripheral areas of the reserve under strict regulations.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The Tejo Estuary is a major wintering ground for waterbirds; the best time for birdwatching is from October to March. In spring and autumn, many migratory birds can also be seen passing through Europe.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning brings the most bird activity, especially as they leave their night roosts. Late afternoon is also good, as birds return to their roosting sites.
📜
Etiquette
Stay on marked paths and maintain distance from bird colonies to avoid disturbing breeding. Dogs are not allowed in many observation areas.
🎒
What to bring
Good binoculars (8x40 or stronger) are essential to identify birds in the extensive wetlands. Camouflage clothing and comfortable rubber boots are recommended for wet and muddy paths.
🧭
Getting there
The Tejo Estuary lies directly east of Lisbon and is easily reachable via the A12 motorway and local roads. Several viewpoints and observation towers are accessible along the shore road.
🦌
What to expect
Birdwatching often requires quiet patience - settle in a good spot and let the birds come to you. Early morning most species are active, but even on cloudy days it's worth watching.
