Vinho Verde Region (Portugal)

Weather…

The Vinho Verde region in northwestern Portugal, also known as Minho, is the largest demarcated wine region in the country. The name "green wine" does not refer to its color but to the youthful freshness of the wine, which is bottled shortly after harvest. The region is characterized by a humid, Atlantic-influenced climate and fertile granitic soils, leading to high acidity and low alcohol content. Traditionally, vines were trained up trees (Enforcado) or on high pergolas (Latada) to save space for other crops and protect the grapes from ground moisture. Key grape varieties include Alvarinho, Loureiro, and Trajadura for white wines, and Vinhão for red wines. The region is also famous for its pretty manor houses (Solares) and its lush, green landscape. Vinho Verde is today a major export product, valued worldwide for its light, slightly sparkling character.
