Tibaes Monastery (Portugal)

Weather…

The Monastery of São Martinho de Tibães, located near Braga, was once the mother house of the Benedictine Order in Portugal and Brazil. Its history dates back to the 6th century, though the current monumental complex was largely shaped during major reconstruction phases in the 17th and 18th centuries. The monastery is regarded as one of the most magnificent examples of Portuguese Baroque and Rococo art, specifically for the exceptional quality of its gilded woodwork (talha dourada) inside the church. The grounds include four cloisters, a vast library, and an impressive church with intricate altarpieces. Following the dissolution of religious orders in 1834, the monastery fell into partial ruin until the Portuguese State acquired it in 1986 and began an extensive restoration. Beyond its architectural significance, it is known for its 'Garden of the Stairs' and the surrounding woodlands, which once supported the monks' self-sufficiency and now serve as a public park.
