Bełchatów Power Station (Poland)

Weather…

The Bełchatów Power Station, located in the Łódź Voivodeship, is the largest lignite-fired power plant in the world and the most powerful thermal power station in Europe. With a total installed capacity exceeding 5,100 megawatts, it generates approximately 20% of Poland's total electricity supply. The facility was constructed during the 1970s and 1980s and has undergone continuous modernization, including the launch of a high-efficiency 858 MW unit in 2011. The fuel required for power generation is sourced directly from the adjacent Bełchatów open-pit mine, which is one of Europe's largest man-made excavations. Due to its massive carbon dioxide emissions, the plant is frequently at the center of international climate policy debates, with operator PGE planning a phased decommissioning by 2036. The technical infrastructure features massive cooling towers and chimneys that are prominent landmarks in the flat landscape of central Poland. The station remains the backbone of the Polish power grid's stability while facing the significant challenges of the transition toward renewable energy sources.
