The historical center of Kędzierzyn-Koźle, primarily located in the Koźle district, is a remarkable example of a fortress town that played a key role in the history of Upper Silesia. Strategically positioned at the confluence of the Oder and Klodnitz rivers, it began as a medieval ducal seat, with parts of the original castle walls still visible today. In the 18th century, under Prussian rule, Koźle was transformed into a formidable bastion fortress, considered one of the most advanced military structures in Europe at the time. The heart of the district is the Koźle Market Square, characterized by its historic townhouses and the Gothic Church of St. Sigismund. The city's destiny was further shaped by the Industrial Revolution, notably the construction of the Klodnitz Canal and a massive river port that became one of the largest in Central Europe. Although the modern city was formed by the merger of several towns in 1975, the historical core retains its unique atmosphere, blending military heritage with 19th-century industrial architecture. Today, the restored fortification elements and scenic riverfront parks provide a peaceful backdrop for exploring this historically rich urban center.
