Głogów is located in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship on the Oder River and is one of Poland's oldest cities, boasting a turbulent history. It gained international renown for the heroic Siege of Głogów in 1109, which remains a potent symbol of Polish resistance. During the Middle Ages, the city served as the seat of a significant duchy and was a vital hub for long-distance trade. Although Głogów was almost entirely destroyed during World War II, a meticulous reconstruction effort has been underway since the 1960s, restoring the old town and the Castle of the Silesian Dukes. The discovery of copper ore deposits in the vicinity sparked a massive economic boom, leading to the establishment of one of the world's largest copper smelters in the city. Today, Głogów successfully integrates its rich medieval heritage with a powerful modern industrial base and its role as a regional center.
