Huacachina Oasis (Peru)

Weather…

The Huacachina Oasis is a natural lagoon situated amidst the desert dunes of the Ica Region in southwestern Peru. Located approximately five kilometers from the city of Ica, it is one of the few natural oases existing in the Americas. The lagoon was formed by an underground aquifer rich in minerals, which local legends claim possesses healing properties. During the 1940s, the site developed into an exclusive resort for the Peruvian elite, and historical buildings from that era still line the waterfront. The surrounding sand dunes are among the highest in the world, with some reaching elevations of over 200 meters. Due to the depletion of groundwater in the region, the lagoon's water level is now artificially maintained to prevent the ecosystem from drying out. The oasis provides a critical habitat for local bird species and palm trees within the arid coastal desert environment. Today, it serves as a prominent hub for adventure tourism, particularly known for sandboarding and dune buggy excursions.
