Risør, often referred to as the White City by the Skagerrak, is one of the best-preserved examples of a historic wooden town in Europe. The settlement gained the status of a trading port (ladested) in 1723 and flourished during the 18th and 19th centuries through the export of timber and lumber to Holland and England. Following a devastating fire in 1861, the town was rebuilt in a uniform late-neoclassical style, maintaining the characteristic white-painted facades. Today, the town in Agder county is a significant cultural hub, hosting the prestigious Risør International Wooden Boat Festival annually. The maritime atmosphere is shaped by the busy inner harbor and the surrounding skerries, which are a popular destination for sailors. In addition to its architecture, the town is known for its lively art scene and numerous galleries located within its historic buildings.
