Tvedestrand is a characterful coastal town in Agder county, renowned for its steep streets and maritime history. During the 19th century, the town developed into a major export hub for timber and iron products from the nearby Næs Jernverk ironworks. A distinctive feature of the town is Strykejernet, one of the narrowest houses in Norway, situated at the junction of two steep lanes. In 2003, Tvedestrand declared itself an International Book Town, leading to the establishment of numerous second-hand bookshops and bookstores in the historic old town center. Geographically, it is located at the head of the Tvedestrandfjord, providing a sheltered natural harbor that is now primarily used for leisure boating. The town also serves as a gateway for boat connections to nearby islands such as Borøya and Sandøya, which are part of the Sørlandet archipelago.
