Kragerø is located on the Telemark coast and is frequently referred to as the 'Pearl of the Coastal Towns'. The area is famous for its striking archipelago consisting of more than 495 islands and skerries, making it one of Norway's most sought-after summer destinations. Historically, Kragerø flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries as a premier port for timber and natural ice exports, as well as a significant shipbuilding center. The world-renowned painter Edvard Munch spent several of his most productive years here, famously describing the town as 'the land of eternal sunshine', an inspiration evident in many of his famous landscapes. The town center's architecture is defined by narrow, cobblestone streets and meticulously maintained white wooden houses that exude a classic maritime charm. Geographically, Kragerø sits at the head of a complex fjord system with direct access to the Skagerrak strait. Today, the economy is driven by high-end tourism, lively art galleries, and seasonal services, as the local population swells several times over during the summer months due to vacationers.
