Hardangervidda Plateau (Norway)

Weather…

The Hardangervidda Plateau is the largest high mountain plateau in Europe and is home to a unique alpine wilderness of international importance. The national park, founded in 1981, protects an area of over 3,400 square kilometers, which is famous for its huge herd of wild reindeer, the largest of its kind in Northern Europe. The landscape is characterized by vast, treeless plains, countless glittering lakes, and the massive Hardangerjøkulen glacier in the north. The harsh climate and barren soils have produced a specialized flora adapted to the short summers and long, snowy winters. Geologically, the plateau is part of the old Scandinavian peninsula, which was ground flat by the last ice age. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Hardangervidda features an extensive network of hiking trails and huts operated by the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT). Historically, the area was an important transit route between Eastern and Western Norway, as evidenced by old stone settings and paths. It remains one of the most impressive examples of the raw and endless beauty of Norwegian nature.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best season to spot wild reindeer is typically from June to September, when the plateau is snow-free and the animals graze on lush grasses. In winter, the reindeer move to lower elevations, making sightings much less likely during those months.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning and late dusk are the most rewarding times, as reindeer are most active foraging for food. At midday, the herds often rest in sheltered hollows, making observation more challenging.
📜
Etiquette
Always keep a respectful distance of at least 300 metres from the reindeer, as they are very shy and disturbances can harm their habitat. Feeding the animals is strictly prohibited to avoid disrupting their natural foraging behaviour and prevent conflicts.
🎒
What to bring
A good pair of binoculars with at least 8x magnification is essential to observe the reindeer from a safe distance. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots and windproof clothing are strongly recommended due to the plateau's changeable weather conditions.
🧭
Getting there
Access to the Hardangervidda Plateau is best via the Rv7 road or the Bergen Railway with stops at Geilo or Finse. From there, marked hiking trails lead onto the plateau, requiring a good map and navigational skills.
🦌
What to expect
Be prepared that even in the best season, spotting reindeer requires patience - the herds are widely scattered and constantly moving. Plan at least a full day for observation and enjoy the impressive landscape even if no animals appear.
