Trolltunga (Norway)

Weather…

Trolltunga, meaning 'Troll's Tongue,' is one of Norway's most spectacular rock formations, jutting out horizontally about 700 meters above Lake Ringedalsvatnet in Ullensvang. Geologically, this granite protrusion was formed approximately 10,000 years ago during the last ice age, when glacial meltwater froze in rock crevices and eventually broke off large chunks, leaving this iconic ledge behind. The hike to Trolltunga is physically demanding, covering 27 kilometers round-trip with an elevation gain of roughly 800 meters. Historically, the area was accessed via the Mågelibanen industrial funicular, but today the journey is strictly a pedestrian endeavor. Due to the massive surge in tourism over the last decade, local authorities have established mountain guards and safety cabins to assist hikers. The view from the tip of the 'tongue' provides an unparalleled vista of the Hardanger region and its deep blue fjords and rugged peaks.
