Flekkefjord is beautifully situated at the head of the Lafjord on the southwest coast of Norway, famous for its historic district known as 'Hollenderbyen' (the Dutch Town). This name reflects the flourishing trade relations with the Netherlands during the 16th and 17th centuries, when timber was exported in exchange for goods like spices and cloth. The district's well-preserved white wooden buildings and narrow alleys are a testament to this wealthy era. A unique local experience is rail biking on the decommissioned Flekkefjord Line, a scenic route that passes through 17 tunnels and has remarkable landscape views. Recently, the town has embraced street art, with large-scale murals by international artists decorating various urban walls. Traditionally supported by fishing and shipping, the economy is now balanced with modern industry and tourism, while the nearby Hidra island remains a popular coastal retreat.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
