Kratovo is one of the most distinctive towns in North Macedonia, uniquely situated within the crater of an extinct volcano in the northeast of the country. The town is renowned for its exceptional medieval architecture, characterized by stone towers and historic bridges spanning steep ravines. Since antiquity, Kratovo has been a major mining center for gold, silver, and copper, reaching its economic peak during the Ottoman era. The urban landscape features narrow, cobblestone streets and traditional houses built in a terraced fashion along the crater slopes. Of the original twelve medieval towers erected to protect the mines, six remain well-preserved today. Kratovo is also famous for its bustling craftsmanship traditions and its local culinary specialty, 'Pastrmajlija,' a traditional stone-baked dough topped with cured meat.
