Since antiquity, Kratovo has been a major mining center for gold, silver, and copper, reaching its economic peak during the Ottoman era. The urban landscape features narrow, cobblestone streets and traditional houses built in a terraced fashion along the crater slopes. Of the original twelve medieval towers erected to protect the mines, six remain well-preserved today. Kratovo is also famous for its bustling craftsmanship traditions and its local culinary specialty, 'Pastrmajlija,' a traditional stone-baked dough topped with cured meat.
