Towers of Kratovo (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Towers of Kratovo are medieval defensive and residential structures that characterize the historical town center. Originally, there were twelve of these towers, of which six remain today, including the Simić Tower, the Zlatko Tower, and the Krstevo Tower. They were built primarily during the Ottoman period to protect wealthy gold and silver mine owners and their valuable products from raids. The towers are mostly square or rectangular, reaching heights of up to 20 meters, and feature massive stone walls with small loopholes and balconies. The Simić Tower is the most prominent and today often serves as a museum or viewpoint. These buildings are a rare example of fortified residential architecture in the Balkans and highlight Kratovo's former economic significance as a leading mining center in the region. The towers give the town a formidable, defensive appearance and are closely linked to local history and folklore.
