Osogovo Main Ridge (Bulgaria)

Weather…

The Osogovo Main Ridge is a prominent mountain range in southwestern Bulgaria, marking the border with North Macedonia. This massif is of volcano-tectonic origin and belongs to the Osogovo-Belasitsa mountain system. The ridge is characterized by a massive, dome-shaped relief with broad crests and deep valleys, distinguishing it from the jagged peaks of the Rila Mountains. Geologically, crystalline schists, gneisses, and granites dominate, rich in ore deposits which have led to a long mining tradition in the region. The highest point on the Bulgarian side is Ruen Peak (2,251 m), offering expansive views over the Western Balkans. The flora of the ridge is diverse, featuring extensive beech and pine forests as well as alpine meadows at higher elevations. Historically, the region was a crossroads of various cultures and an important site for mining lead, zinc, and silver since antiquity.
