Hwangryong Fortress (North Korea)

Weather…

Hwangryong Fortress, meaning 'Yellow Dragon Fortress', is a Goguryeo-era mountain fortress strategically located near the present-day border. It was part of a defensive system designed to protect the capital, Pyongyang, from southern attacks. The fortress walls, following the natural terrain of the mountain, stretch for several kilometers and were built of earth and stone. Archaeological findings suggest the fortress was built in the 5th or 6th century and was used until the Goryeo period. Inside the fortress were barracks, storehouses, and a command post. Today, the ruins of the fortress are an important testimony to the advanced military engineering and strategic planning of the Goguryeo kingdom. The site also features panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
