Hamhung, the capital of South Hamgyong Province, is the second-largest city in North Korea and a crucial center for the chemical industry. The city was heavily bombed during the Korean War and subsequently rebuilt with Soviet and East German aid, which is reflected in its functional architecture. The Hamhung Grand Theatre is a striking example of this architectural style. The city is known for the production of Vinalon, a coal-based synthetic fiber, and hosts the vast February 8 Vinalon Complex. Hamhung is also an important educational center with several universities, including the Hamhung University of Chemical Industry. Although an industrial city, it is located near the scenic coast of the Sea of Japan, which gives it some landscape diversity.
