Sinpho is a coastal city in South Hamgyong province that plays a central and highly secret role in North Korea's naval and arms strategy. The city is the main base of the Korean People's Navy's submarine fleet and the center for the development and construction of submarines, including those capable of launching ballistic missiles (SLBMs). The shipyards and naval bases in Sinpo are strictly sealed off and are of crucial importance for the country's nuclear deterrent. In addition to its military importance, Sinpo is also an important fishing port, and the fish processing industry is a significant economic sector.
