Sinuiju, located on the border with China and separated from the Chinese city of Dandong only by the Yalu River, is North Korea's most important land trade and transportation hub. Almost all official trade between the two countries is conducted over the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, which connects the two cities. Sinuiju is the capital of North Pyongan province and has a slightly more cosmopolitan atmosphere than other North Korean cities due to constant interaction with China. The city is a center for light industry, especially cosmetics and textiles. In 2002, it was declared the 'Sinuiju Special Administrative Region,' a failed experiment to create a market economy zone modeled on Hong Kong. Despite the failure of this plan, the city remains a crucial lifeline for the North Korean economy.
