Obudu Plateau (Nigeria)

Weather…

The Obudu Plateau is situated in Cross River State in southeastern Nigeria, near the border with Cameroon, and forms part of the West African highlands. With an average elevation of approximately 1576 meters, it features a temperate climate that stands in stark contrast to the tropical heat experienced across much of the country. The plateau was initially developed in 1951 by M. McCaughley as a cattle ranch (Obudu Cattle Ranch) after he surveyed the area during an expedition. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills, deep valleys, and remnants of montane rainforest that support a high biodiversity of birds and primates. A key attraction is the cable car system commissioned in 2005, which transports visitors from the base of the mountain to the summit resort and is recognized as one of the longest in Africa. Beyond its agricultural roots, the plateau has evolved into a major center for ecotourism. It also hosts the annual Obudu Mountain Race, one of the world's richest mountain running competitions, attracting international athletes.
