Tibiri, also known as Tibiri-Gobir, is located in the Maradi Region of southern Niger and holds outstanding historical significance as the traditional capital of the Gobir Kingdom. After the kingdom was driven from its original center in Alkalawa by Usman dan Fodio's jihad in the early 19th century, exiles established Tibiri as the new seat for their ruler, the Sarkin Gobir. To this day, the town remains the spiritual and cultural heart of the Gobirawa, a subgroup of the Hausa people, and preserves ancient ceremonies and power structures. Geographically, the town is situated in a fertile area near the Goulbi n'Maradi river, supporting grain cultivation and livestock farming. The local economy is based on traditional crafts, agriculture, and the cultural heritage that attracts visitors and scholars alike. Tibiri also serves as the administrative center for a department of the same name within the Maradi Region. The town has an estimated population of about 50,000 residents and remains a symbol of resistance against Fulani hegemony.
