Mayahi is a town in the Maradi Region of south-central Niger, located approximately 90 kilometers north of the city of Maradi. The town serves as the administrative center for a department that encompasses one of the country's most densely populated agricultural zones. Geographically, Mayahi lies in the transition zone between the Sahel and the more fertile south, enabling the cultivation of groundnuts, millet, and cowpeas. The local economy is almost entirely based on subsistence farming and trade conducted at weekly markets, which draw buyers from across the region. Historically, the area was part of the sphere of influence of the Hausa kingdoms and continues to play a role in the cultural fabric of this ethnic group. Despite challenges posed by irregular rainfall, Mayahi remains a critical food supplier for the surrounding area. The town's population has grown steadily over recent decades and is now estimated to exceed 40,000 residents.
