Historical Port of N'Guigmi (Niger)

Weather…

N'Guigmi is a historic town in the Diffa Region of Niger, famously known as the former port city on the northwestern shores of Lake Chad. In the mid-20th century, the town was a bustling maritime hub where boats docked to transport fish, natron, and livestock across the lake to Chad and Nigeria. Historically, it served as the easternmost administrative post of colonial Niger, marking the boundary of the French and British spheres of influence in the Sahel. However, the drastic recession of Lake Chad since the 1960s has left N'Guigmi landlocked, with the water now situated many kilometers away from its original shoreline. This environmental shift has transformed the town's economy from fishing and maritime trade to land-based agriculture and pastoralism. Despite these changes, N'Guigmi remains a culturally rich center, home to a diverse population of Kanuri, Fulani, and Buduma people. The town's historical architecture and the remnants of its old port structures serve as a stark reminder of the region's dynamic environmental and social history.
