N'Gourti is a rural commune and the administrative capital of the N'Gourti Department in the Diffa Region of easternmost Niger. The town is situated deep within the Chad Basin in an extremely arid zone that marks the transition into the Sahara Desert. Geographically, the area is defined by massive sand dunes and scattered oases, providing a home to nomadic groups such as the Toubou and Arabs. Historically, N'Gourti served as a remote but vital checkpoint for caravans and migratory herders crossing the eastern Sahel. The local economy relies almost exclusively on extensive livestock farming, with camels and goats being the primary assets for the population. Due to the immense distances from Niger's western urban centers, N'Gourti is one of the most isolated administrative hubs in the country. In recent years, development efforts have focused on enhancing water access and educational facilities for the widely dispersed inhabitants of this desert region.
