Vlietlanden (Netherlands)

Weather…

The Vlietlanden near Maasland in the province of South Holland is a unique natural monument, as it is one of the few areas in the Netherlands where the soil has never been drained or excavated for peat. Consequently, the original medieval peat level has been preserved, making the area ecologically irreplaceable. The Vlietlanden consist of reed beds and marshy hay meadows that are only accessible by boat, forming an undisturbed wilderness in a densely populated region. The site hosts rare flora such as the marsh fern and various wild orchid species that thrive in the extremely wet and nutrient-poor conditions. Managed by Natuurmonumenten, the area is maintained through traditional late-season mowing to protect ground-nesting meadow birds. As part of the Midden-Delfland region, the Vlietlanden function as a green lung between the surrounding major cities, preserving an authentic piece of the historical Dutch polder landscape.
