Leiden City Hall (Netherlands)

Weather…

The Leiden City Hall (Stadhuis van Leiden) is a prominent historical monument located on the Breestraat in the city center. Its most striking feature is the Renaissance facade dating back to 1597, designed by the famous architect Lieven de Key from Haarlem. This facade is the longest Renaissance front in the Netherlands and survived a catastrophic fire in January 1929 that destroyed most of the original building behind it. Following the fire, the city hall was extensively rebuilt and expanded between 1932 and 1935 according to the designs of architect Cornelis Blaauw, who integrated the surviving facade into a modern administrative complex. The building features a distinctive tower and a carillon that rings out over the city. Today, it remains the seat of the local government and is a popular venue for official ceremonies and weddings due to its grand architectural style and historical importance. The interior houses significant artworks and preserved rooms that reflect Leiden's rich administrative heritage.
