Capelle aan den IJssel is a city in the province of South Holland, bordering the eastern side of Rotterdam. The settlement originated in the 12th century along the banks of the Hollandsche IJssel river and remained a small agricultural and shipping village for centuries. A significant geographical fact is that the municipality contains the lowest inhabited point in the Netherlands, measured at 6.76 meters below sea level. During the 1950s and 1960s, Capelle underwent rapid urbanization, transforming into a modern suburban city to accommodate the growing workforce of the Rotterdam area. The city is home to critical infrastructure, including the Hollandsche IJssel storm surge barrier, which was the first component of the massive Delta Works project completed in 1958. Today, Capelle features a mix of modern residential districts, extensive green spaces like the Hitland forest, and direct access to the Rotterdam metro system.
