Oegstgeest is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the province of South Holland, located immediately adjacent to the city of Leiden. Archaeological evidence indicates habitation dating back to the Roman era and the early Middle Ages, with the first written record appearing in the 10th century. A significant cultural landmark is the Castle Oud-Poelgeest, built in the 17th century, which notably served as the home of the world-renowned Dutch physician Herman Boerhaave. Today, the municipality is regarded as an affluent residential area that has successfully maintained its village-like atmosphere despite its proximity to major urban centers. A major modern attraction of international standing is the 'CORPUS' museum, which provides an interactive journey through the human body inside a unique 35-meter-high building shaped like a seated human figure. Oegstgeest also contributes to the regional economy through its proximity to the Leiden Bio Science Park. The town is characterized by its high quality of life, extensive green spaces, and excellent connectivity via the A44 motorway.
