Spijkenisse is located on the island of Putten in the province of South Holland and serves as the main center of the Nissewaard municipality. Originally a small fishing and farming village, the city underwent massive development in the latter half of the 20th century as a key satellite city for nearby Rotterdam. This expansion resulted in numerous modern residential districts and a seamless connection to the Rotterdam metro system. An architectural highlight is the "Boekenberg" (Book Mountain) library, a striking glass-pyramid structure opened in 2012 that houses thousands of books in a unique vertical arrangement. Spijkenisse is also famous for constructing real-life versions of the fictional bridges featured on Euro banknotes. The city provides a blend of urban amenities and natural surroundings, with the Oude Maas river and extensive polders providing space for outdoor recreation. Today, it remains a vital residential hub for the workforce of the surrounding industrial and port regions, blending functionality with innovative design.
