Bergse Plas (Netherlands)

Weather…

The Bergse Plas, divided into the Voorplas and the Achterplas, is an idyllic lake landscape in the Hillegersberg district of Rotterdam. Like many water bodies in the western Netherlands, these lakes were created in the 17th and 18th centuries through intensive peat extraction, which was needed to fuel the growing cities. Today, the lakes form a green oasis within the urban space and are surrounded by historic villas and well-kept gardens. The area has high ecological importance as a sanctuary for water birds and as a filter for the local water system. Recreational activities such as sailing, rowing, and fishing are very popular here, while motorized traffic is strictly limited to maintain the peace. Along the shores, there are remnants of old windmills, such as the Prinsenmolen, which once served to drain the surrounding polders and today represent the cultural heritage of the region.
